detailed description:

Together with the Rupe del Calvario (788 m.), Poggio Medola represents the most consistent ophiolithic complex of the Modenese Apennines. The locality of Medola is mentioned as far back as 1071 among the possessions of the Abbey of Frassinoro, and its castle was set on top of an ophiolithic rock dominating the Dragone Valley. Unfortunately the castle is no longer standing; all that remains is the tank used for collecting rainwater, recovered recently. At the foot of the Rupe lies a small inhabited hamlet, where recent restoration work has permitted the recovery of the courtyard and an ancient ice-house.
