detailed description:

The small refuge built by the State Foresters Corps, recently restructured and currently managed by the Regional Park of the High Modenese Apennines and the West Modena Apennine Mountain Community, is characterised by a portico offering emergency shelter. It is located 1539 metres above sea level in the extensive Maccherie plateau, a beautiful marshy valley partially occupied by a peat moor invaded in late spring and early summer by the blossoming of splendid flowers, including botanical peculiarities such as Carex Davalliana and Swertia Perennis (Star Gentian), a rare flower which in Italy grows only in the Alps and in very few places in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Barricaded by a morainic chain (including the massive bulk of Mount Giovarello) and surrounded by a splendid beech wood beginning to turn to high forest, the valley holds great interest for its wonderful nature and landscape. Hikers can request the key of the refuge from the offices of the park or the Mountain Community.
